Take a fat burning pill? eat fruits and veggies? go to an all you can eat buffet, or the gym? or sit on the couch and order a pizza to be delivered? take another fat burning pill?
I am all for humans being healthier and I have seen the cost as well as the psychological and physical issues with folks who needed gastric bypass and other help to keep the weight gain from simply crushing them. What I see more, is people eating far too many calories, most of it in the west, processed fast food in an instant gratification society where I guess one feeling discomfort or hungry is a bad thing.
Bill on the linked in boards, posted an article in the Internet boards about the genetic manipulation of the obesity gene and the development of a pill that could be taken to counteract the ability of the body gain the weight and become larger.
I asked, “ what are the percentage of people that actually have the genetic makeup versus the amount of people that simply are putting too many calories in and not moving enough to burn the excess off?” It was an honest question, as like ADHD, there is an actual disease, but I see a whole lot of people diagnosed with it that most likely not the actual disease so that a pill can be prescribe to get the parent, teacher, or doctor to a place from “Johnny is simply a hyperactive kid” to “Johnny has a problem and we are medicating it. Thank god we found the problem!”
The same path appears to be on the mark for the new obesity pills. Instead of eating a sensible diet, perhaps one can take the pill and then eat all the food one wants and it will magically all just evaporate. You take a few other pills and voila…you are happy, perky, numb, dumb and zoned out, but you walk around in society with a smile upon your face. The southern USA readers will relate to “if it looks right, it must be right” in relation to the make-up we tend to put upon ourselves to cover all of our flaws and ugly bits from others view and pretend we have it all together.
What I find bizarre is when we started the Agrowbox project; the idea was to grow as much nutrition-laden food in the smallest space and least amount of time, water and with no chemical fertilizers. The problem was malnutrition and lack of calories for the orphans and refugees in the world. It turns out the Agrowvillage diet is probably 5 times healthier when compared to the average USA diet. In the USA it is cheap to eat lots of bad food, yet, to eat a decent healthy high quality diet, you pay a high price for it. If you go overseas, like Europe, it is the sugar and sweets that cost you more. Healthy vegetables and fruits are abundant and inexpensive. If you go to Africa, there is so much need in many places that even the chickens are starving and have white colored yolks.
I also used to think one had to go to the gym to be healthy. After I stopped playing American football, I did what about 80% of the players do, I kept eating the same amount of food and reduced caloric output via physical activity 85%. Yes, one day you wake up and go “what did I do to myself?” And then the slow process, that is far less fun than eating the food to put the weight on comes where the weight takes much longer to take off, than it did to put on.
So most of my life, the best insurance policy I had was an inexpensive membership to a fitness center or gym, AND, I went and used the facilities and tailored exercise routines that took the least amount of time and gave the best results. Yes, that means changing everything every workout and it was fairly high intensity. Now I see where my friend didn’t think people would actually exercise, the reality is that I find exercise dull, boring, a bit hard but…I feel a whole lot better, think better, am calmer, and appear to have far less health issues than many of my counterparts in life, sans all the long term issues of American football with the joints and lack of memory from smashing ones head into another equally match head.
When I came to Switzerland, I wanted to join a gym. There are a few of them around and at first I did work out in more of a muscle head gym where there were more "keptin anabolics" walking around than I had seen since the days at Venice beach in Los Angeles. The rate for the swiss gym was ridiculous for the hours, equipment and service that were provided.
For more money, I could join a place that offered what you can get at any planet or 24-hour fitness gym. So I went online and looked at bodyweight exercise programs and paid for a few. The one I really think does the best is a guy that sends emails everyday talking about his love of pancake and using all the wrong clichés that I guess people need to hear before they do anything. So I downloaded something called bodyweight torch, looked at it and thought, “I am 52 years old, too old for this.” This is the type of stuff we did 30 years ago with plyometric, strength, speed and agility training.
I was wrong.
If you just start and consistently work at it, I was amazed that my overall core health improved so much doing less than 20 minutes of high intensity work 4-5 times a week. I actually am probably fitter than when I went to the gym and did the traditional eccentric/concentric weight/cardio routines that are so common.
Inside the United States, we have so many varieties and choices of anything that we are simply spoiled not with high quality, but with mass amounts of cheap stuff to consume. The hard part is how NOT to eat a zillion calories when just one of the things you put in your mouth can easily have several hundred calories in it. For this part, I do think something has to change inside the USA to help systemic change in diet and nutrition. I am looking forward to bringing the Agrowbox and agrowvillage testing facilities to the USA, as all of the work can benefit everyone on the planet, not just the staving kids and refugees in lands far away.
We spend hours in vehicles communing, we don’t really know what a family meal, the family has been told to fill every moment with their time to become everything and anything – when the reality is this illusion is not possible without something breaking over time.
It is funny, our misconstruing of priorities and obligations have left the simple act of eating a basic healthy nutritious meal, and spending a bit of time improving our physical healthy – has given way to the ridiculous notion that popping a pill is actually going to solve the problem.
All it will do is mask the problem.
But I guess we will all look good while we sweep the problem under the carpet?
- Sorry that today is a bit of a longer than normal ramble. I do understand the obesity gene, as half of my family probably has it. I am thankful that I got the genetic mix I did, yet, after guinea pigging exercise, diet/nutrition and figuring out how to grow food just about anywhere on the planet. I get sad when I go back to the USA and see the size of where the country is going, as well as how it is spreading to other parts of the planet.
