One of the great mysteries of the post war era is how each side rewrote history, or attempts to rewrite history of events that happened as if they never did. Some people on the planet don’t want to believe the holocaust ever happened. I am not sure what sort of mental disassociation happens when one is presented a mountain of facts and the mind can still live in denial.
The family I am going to write about today lived in the Netherlands when the war broke out. They were a Jewish family and they soon learned that they were persona non-gratis with the invading forces. They went and hid out in a secret room in a house.
Originally there was one family of four in the room. A mom, dad and two children. As the war raged on, and with the quick victory in the area from the German army, perhaps there were not as many troops left behind as the German army avoided the Maginot line and simply went around it into France?
For four years the family lived in the room, hidden. I was told at times the German soldiers would occupy the house for periods and the family would live in terror at being found. When the war ended, there were 10 people living in the room. I don’t know if it was an organized Jewish underground, or if people all found each other somehow and bonded together to live in uncertainty?
The part of this story that amazes me is that a young boy had to live in the room and basically not really go out and exercise or play. Instead he learned to draw. When he got bored, he took the pencil and put it in his other hand and taught himself how to draw with his opposite hand. By the end of the war, he was able to draw equally well with both hands.
Before the war, the family was quite large in size. After the war, only the four members that hid in the house were left living. The rest perished in concentration camps.
The world still hasn’t learned any lessons today about one group trying to obliterate another based on skin color, race, religion, creed, or political view. It actually has gotten worse these days. Perhaps that is why this summer has been so wet and rainy in Switzerland? God really is crying for the current state of how man is treating his fellow man on the planet?
