The past few days, have been a type of schedule that is opposite of what I try to live each day. People wonder why they might not seem to get anything done, it is because in life, there are times when start/stop and unrelated ideas and projects seem to keep one off balance, or not in synch with the normal schedule designed to minimize distractions of obligations we seem to fill our lives with that take time from the priorities we ideally should be doing. So here are a few snippets about brainstorm café, cake you can get drunk by eating, and moments in life.
BRAINSTORM NET - If you told me 10 years ago, as I was sitting at the Starbucks on Bee Cave Road in Austin, TX - house-sitting for my old best friend that an idea I had no experience, desire, or real interest in working on would evolve to where it is today, I really would have looked at you as if you had ingested too many drugs or had a mental illness.
If you told me that the idea of food security, shelter, water, and the idea to get rid of handouts for the world of not for profits and the current game of good hearts meeting bad planning, corruption meeting greed, and the world where feeding a bowl of food and retaining control is deemed “ok” as well as profitable for the powers that be. Yes, i would have looked at you wondering about your senility.
I still sometime wonder, “how did the world of helping become an industry? And who is really helping whom? “ The idea of actually teaching people how to fish is not a popular on in the modern world. It is far more lucrative to simply give them a fish each day and keep the trapped in a bondage of sorts.
That ends the digression for the day, all I know is that today, I have reams of sketchbooks, ideas, mind maps, crude and advanced prototypes and what we lacked in all this work for Agrowvillage was a spot on the planet to simply built, test, tweak and learn from.
It is the part of the design and rollout of new ideas that few want to realize you need. The actual time and space to play. Have you ever noticed when you are building out from existing plans, that many times one goes, “why did they do this? How come this feels so (insert adjective)?”
It is because you either have to pay more money, or spend more time to take and tweak the solution and polish it into becoming something special. The polishing is what takes the most time.
While Augmanity deals with the deeper issues of man inside himself, Agrowvillage has morphed into a space where we a suppository of knowledge can come in, allow for some truly interesting solutions in a world where soon 75% of the population will live in urban centers, yet, one can literally plan oneself almost anywhere on the planet (it helps if you took the time to learn to use tools and build stuff with your hands versus just a few mouse clicks and output to the CNC machines, 3d printers and plasma cutters….ok, that way is far sexier and impresses people more than having splinters and dirty hands, jeans and a tried body.)
Do I open all this up? Post the drawings diagrams, models, pictures….Agrowvillage
Do I create a small space for nerds, geeks and people with big hearts that want to help others to come?
What good is acquiring all the hands on knowledge if you can’t pass it along?
Questions that I need time to think about which way to go. In the meantime, where you aware you could get drunk eating a piece of cake?
GET DRUNK EATING CAKE? -Yesterday was a family day. As I try to navigate form working 7 days a week on ideas and things all the time. My life in Switzerland has me starting, stopping, crashing, and working to adjust to the “Swiss” way of life. While I joke about the united state being open 24/7 being something I really love – I also realize that having the you can have whatever you want, whenever you want mentality is simply not very good for the overall social fabric of the country.
I think that last sentence will upset liberals and conservatives alike. I just wonder how many American really realize how good we have it in the context with the rest of the planet? They say 9 out of 10 empires collapse from within, and in the past 30-40 years, while I really do appreciate the massive “choices” we have, I can’t say everyone out for themselves and the message to “look good” and “acquire as much stuff” will ever fill ones heart and soul. Then again, if you look at religion, we have even created a society where from the Christianity sense, where pride is the worst of mans passions – we seem to be full of it.
How does this get me to family day?
There are two elderly women I have taken a shining to here. On is my wife’s godmother, and then the other is her godmother’s sister. You have two very different and unique personality types, yet, they grew up as sisters to her father. In some respects both of these women remind me of my moms mom.
We visited Tonte Cecile for coffee yesterday. If you want to see how confused I am in Switzerland, you have a French name, in the German section of Switzerland, and when you say the name in the Swiss German Dialect, you say “Tonte (aunt) say-say” for the phonetics of “Cecile”
After typing the last sentence, I understand more of “why?” the language is killing me here.
Tonte Cecile knew I loved coffee and went out and got some very nice Netspresso pods and she treated us to this torte/cake.
My initial reaction was it was some delicate vanilla filled pastry crème torte with a simple powdered sugar topping.
I eagerly took a forkful and put it in my mouth and thought, “Holy sh*t what is this? It is like drinking a shot of schnapps!”
Hopefully the transition between the sweet heavy cream vanilla idea in my mind and a literal cake that was somehow infused with schnapps, yet, had no liquid form and was in a solid state did not have me make a funny face.
Tonte Cecile took her forkful, much like my grandmother would take a piece of her chocolate or her little medicinal bit of port wine.
“Yes, this is good. This is a traditional Swiss cake. You can tell there is schnapps in it. Most of the places in town probably have their bakers drink it instead of putting in it the cake!” Smiled Tonte Cecile.
All I know is that while I am really not a big fan of schnapps, I had fun getting tipsy eating a piece of cake.
AGE & PASSION - I am pleased that I captured a few interesting images on the cell phone of elderly people simply having fun being together. It is interesting that at my age, I can’t wait to get up and start brainstorming, working on ideas and creating new things. Perhaps it is odd in that I don’t see much of the world getting excited like that, rather it tends to move in the world that I mentioned in the very first paragraph of this post.
My best advise to anyone, particularly the young people is that one is not afraid to try to go after your passion and try the ideas you want in life. I have met too many people who had careers and are in misery with them – all waiting for “someday” when they will go work on dreams and ideas.
What I have learned, more through the failures than the successes is that you “normal” life is a good stable path for you to walk through your time on this planet. If you choose a path that is different, you will at times find yourself swimming against the stream of popularity and fitting in.
All I learned is no matter which path – life seems to work itself out just fine. In the short term, you might not see how, but in the long term, great goodness comes.
Just try and find your passion. If you are lucky enough to actually find it, keep pursuing it – no matter what the “norm” says.
That is all i have to say this day, in a few moments I had to myself, to actually think…make that “try to think.”
