BAH BAH BLACK SHEEP – if you haven’t gathered, the Swiss farm systems is highly regulated and I am guessing heavily subsidized in some way to allow for food security inside the country and/or the desire to keep small farmers and a way of life in business. It is nice to be able to go to the farmer directly and buy eggs, cheese and other products whose quality is very high and not of the world of mass-produced productivity with hormones and genetic modification.
On the way to school I always pass by a filed that has sheep in it. These are the more interesting characters as they like to stop, stare at me walking by and don’t say a word. They just stare at you. But in their seeming mindless moment, they actually appear to be rather cute as each week they appear to be like an Alzheimer’s patient and see me again, yet have no memory of who I am. The cows I walk by all pretend to remember who I am, but I realize the reality is that they probably think I am the farmer coming from a distance away and they all walk over to the fence to greet me. When they realize I have no food and am not going to milk them, they quickly loose interest in who I am, yet, at least for a moment, appear to acknowledge my existence.
I tested the theory on the way home. The sheep just stood there, staring at me. I tried to speak german to them, they remained silent….just staring, staring, staring. If i didn't know any better, i would swear they were stoned out of their minds.
Kind of creepy the way they just stare at you, and follow you with their eyes.
Maybe they remember when we were in high school and my friends mom would sell us a lamb to grill.
